dwellers

Sharks are fed, heads explode; the ship keeps sailing. Inspired by Dionne Brand’s A Map to the Door of No Return, Dwellers tells a story of 9 Black people on the deck of a ship headed back to that infamous site of rupture and memory. An inherently fluid, poetic and experimental ensemble exploration occurring out of linear and historical time, this play’s scenes can be rearranged in any order around an anchoring beginning and end. What does it mean to return home?

dwellers play collective

this play inspired the creation of a new Black theatre ensemble that began gathering in 2020. we are actively seeking funding streams and mentorship as a new theatre ensemble. we move with this mission statement:

Dwellers Play Collective (DPC) is an ever-growing theatre ensemble that gathers near bodies of water. As we nourish one another, we make space for Black folks to play, experiment, question and dwell. With love, we strive to create conditions in which Blackness and Black theatremaking may be boundless and diasporic, defying binaries on every front.
